Meta, led by former United Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister and Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Sir Nick Clegg, has announced that the Instagram app will soon feature a monetization option for Nigerian creators, allowing them to earn from their content.

This feature, slated for release in June 2024, aims to empower indigenous content creators to generate income through the platform.

Clegg shared this development during a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of deepening partnerships with Nigeria. President Tinubu, in turn, highlighted his administration’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a leader in information and communications technology across Africa.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu underscored the significance of leveraging technology to drive economic growth and enhance opportunities for Nigerian youths. He outlined initiatives such as the 3MTT program, aimed at training three million youths in digital technology and essential skills, as part of efforts to prepare them for global competition.

President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to lead the continent in digital technology, emphasizing the value of data in national development. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in technological advancements, highlighting the need for mutually beneficial partnerships.

In his remarks, Clegg expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for facilitating the landing of the Meta-backed deep-sea cable in Nigeria, describing it as a transformative infrastructure project with significant economic potential for Africa.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, emphasized the critical role of Meta platforms in Nigeria’s digital economy. He stressed the importance of partnerships and engagement to promote development in the sector, noting that digital technology presents opportunities to connect Africa and contribute to global development.
