Meta, the parent company of Facebook, on Wednesday adopted temporary safeguards to limit “potentially unwelcome or unwanted comments” on posts regarding the crisis between Israel and Hamas.
“Our policies are designed to keep people safe on our apps while giving everyone a voice.” Meta said.
“We apply these policies equally around the world and there is no truth to the suggestion that we are deliberately suppressing voice.”
In an updated blog post, Meta said that it would modify the default option for anyone who can comment on news and public Facebook posts produced by users “in the region” to only their friends and followers.
The social media corporation also said it would make it impossible to scroll through your Facebook feed and see the first one or two comments on postings.
Some users who expressed messages of support for Palestinians or Gazan residents earlier this week accused Meta of stifling their speech. Hamas is labelled a “dangerous organisation” by Meta, and information endorsing the organisation is forbidden.
