Instagram head Adam Mosseri has disclosed that Twitter rival, Threads has an API in the works.
Developers will now be able to create unique apps and experiences centred around Threads.
Journalist Casey Newton was discussing a Threads experience that resembled TweetDeck with a user when Mosseri responded. The head of Instagram voiced concerns about publishers uploading a tonne of content and overshadowing content created by creators.
“We’re working on it. My concern is that it’ll mean a lot more publisher content and not much more creator content, but it still seems like something we need to get done,” Mosseri said in a post.
Although Mosseri worries about publishers using API integration to push too much content, content creators likewise require diverse tools to post different kinds of information. If an API is integrated, it is simpler for developers to provide features that are appropriate for a given platform.
Social networks like Reddit and Twitter (now X) make it hard for outside developers to build clients; nevertheless, Threads can open up its API to support a thriving app ecosystem.
Some developers have created clients for competing networks, like Mastodon and Bluesky. But in comparison to Threads, both networks have fewer users.
