Meta Platforms Inc. is restructuring its artificial intelligence division, splitting the newly created group into four separate teams and reallocating many existing AI staff.
The move, outlined in an internal memo from Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, aims to accelerate Meta’s push toward developing superintelligence and make better use of its multibillion-dollar investments in AI talent, according to Bloomberg.
“Superintelligence is coming, and in order to take it seriously, we need to organize around the key areas that will be critical to reach it — research, product and infra,” Wang wrote in the memo.
The newly restructured group, Meta Superintelligence Labs, will operate through four divisions:
TBD Lab – Led by Alexandr Wang, this unit will oversee Meta’s large language models, including the Llama tools powering its AI assistant.
FAIR – The long-standing Fundamental AI Research lab, dedicated to longer-term, cutting-edge AI research.
Products and Applied Research – Headed by former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, this team will translate models and research into consumer-facing products.
MSL Infra – Tasked with building and maintaining the costly infrastructure required to support Meta’s AI ambitions.
No job cuts were included in Tuesday’s reorganization, according to a person familiar with the matter who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.
The Information first reported details of the new structure.
Meta’s shake-up comes as the company seeks to steady its AI efforts after months of aggressively recruiting top researchers from rivals with lucrative pay packages, in some cases totaling hundreds of millions of dollars.
