Meta is reorganizing its artificial intelligence operations, dividing its AI division into two separate teams in an effort to speed up product development.
Under the new structure, which does not involve any job cuts, Meta’s AI staff will be assigned to one of two groups: an AI Products team focused on consumer applications, and an AGI Foundations unit dedicated to long-term research and development, Axios reported.
The AI Products team will work on integrating AI features across Meta’s major platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as further development of Meta’s recently launched stand-alone AI assistant app.
The AGI Foundations team will concentrate on advancing Meta’s underlying AI technologies, including continued improvements to its family of Llama large language models.
The move comes as Meta ramps up efforts to keep pace with rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in the rapidly evolving generative AI landscape. In recent months, Meta has introduced its Llama for Startups initiative, aiming to attract early-stage companies to its AI tools. The company also hosted LlamaCon in April, using the event to emphasize its ambition to compete at the forefront of AI research and deployment.
As the AI arms race intensifies, Meta’s internal reshuffling signals a sharpened focus on both near-term product rollouts and long-term breakthroughs in artificial general intelligence.
