Meta Platforms is preparing to make a deeper push into smart glasses at its annual Connect conference next month, with plans to launch its first consumer-ready glasses featuring a built-in display, according to people familiar with the matter.
The glasses, internally codenamed Hypernova, will include a small digital display embedded in the right lens and are expected to retail for about $800, according to CNBC.
Meta is developing the device in partnership with Franco-Italian eyewear giant EssilorLuxottica, which previously collaborated with the company on its Ray-Ban Stories line.
In addition to the glasses, Meta plans to introduce a new wristband that will enable users to control the device using hand gestures, marking the company’s first move into wearable input hardware beyond headsets.
The announcements are slated for Meta Connect, a two-day developer event focused on virtual reality, augmented reality, and the metaverse.
The conference, originally known as Oculus Connect, was rebranded after Facebook’s corporate transition to Meta in 2021.
Meta and EssilorLuxottica have been partners since 2021, when they launched the first-generation Ray-Ban Stories, glasses that let users capture photos and videos with voice commands.
The second-generation model, released last year with expanded AI features, gained unexpected traction among early adopters.
Meta declined to comment on the upcoming product launch.
EssilorLuxottica did not respond to requests for comment.
It remains unclear what brand EssilorLuxottica will use for the new AR-enabled glasses. However, a Meta job listing posted this week suggests the company sees them as part of its growing wearables portfolio.
The listing, for a technical program manager role, described the “Wearables organization” as being responsible for Ray-Ban AR glasses and “other wearable hardware.”
