A group founded by Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and TomTom, and data from developers may be able to create their own maps to compete with Google Maps and Apple Maps.
The Overture Maps Foundation is an organization that was established last year. The group just made available its first open map dataset.
With the help of this dataset, independent developers can create their own mapping or navigation services, upending the Apple-Google monopoly.
The dataset also provides details about administrative boundaries and 59 million “points of interest,” including eateries and famous locations. Microsoft and Meta both collected and donated the data.
The corporations stated when the group was first introduced last year that the data will eventually grow to encompass more locations, routing and navigation, and 3D building data.
The Overture Map Foundation was established with the goal of making it simpler and less expensive for developers to create apps. To put things in perspective, access to the Google Maps API costs money.
Web app developers must pay to access Apple Maps, despite the fact that native app developers can use it for free.
