Meta lays off staff in Reality Labs division amid ongoing restructuring

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has begun another round of layoffs within its Reality Labs division as part of a broader internal restructuring effort, the company confirmed on Thursday.

The job cuts primarily impact employees at Oculus Studios, Meta’s in-house game development unit responsible for creating titles for its Quest virtual reality headsets. Among those affected are team members working on Supernatural, a popular VR fitness game.

“These changes are meant to help Studios work more efficiently on future mixed reality experiences for our growing audience,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

The company did not disclose the number of roles affected. As of December 31, 2024, Meta reported a global workforce of 74,067 employees.

Reality Labs, which oversees the development and marketing of Meta’s VR hardware and software, including the Quest headset line, posted a $5 billion loss in the fourth quarter of 2024. Despite the mounting costs, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reiterated the company’s long-term commitment to building the future of augmented and virtual reality technologies.

The latest round of restructuring underscores Meta’s continued effort to streamline operations while pushing forward with its vision of the metaverse — a digital frontier the company sees as central to its future growth.
