Meta launches specialised team to develop Artificial General Intelligence – Report

Meta Platforms, under the leadership of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is reportedly forming a specialized team focused on artificial general intelligence, according to a Bloomberg report.

This secretive unit, internally dubbed the superintelligence group, represents Meta’s most significant AGI effort to date.

While exact goals remain undisclosed, the formation of this group is said to signals Meta’s intent to compete directly in the high-stakes race for AGI — a form of AI that can perform any intellectual task a human can.

Meta has reportedly enlisted Alexandr Wang, the 28-year-old founder and CEO of Scale AI, to join its newly formed superintelligence group, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.

In addition to bringing Wang on board, Meta is said to be in discussions to invest billions of dollars in Scale AI, potentially as part of a broader deal that would see other Scale employees join the new AGI-focused lab.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has recently faced internal challenges, including management disagreements over its AI strategy, high employee turnover, and several underwhelming product launches, according to sources.

Despite these setbacks, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has poured billions into transforming the company into a leader in artificial intelligence.

Since OpenAI launched the ChatGPT chatbot in 2022, the tech industry has been in a race to develop more advanced A.I. technologies.

In response, Mark Zuckerberg has accelerated Meta’s efforts to embed A.I. across its product lineup, including smart glasses and the newly introduced Meta AI app.

Remaining at the forefront of A.I. is essential for Meta, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, as the technology is expected to shape the future of the industry.

To secure their positions, these tech giants have funneled billions into A.I. start-ups and internal research.

Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI, while Amazon has committed $8 billion to Anthropic.

Meta and Scale AI declined to comment.

Superintelligence is seen by top researchers as a long-term objective in A.I. development.

In the near term, companies like OpenAI and Google are focused on creating artificial general intelligence, or A.G.I.—a system capable of performing any intellectual task a human can.

However, achieving A.G.I. remains an uncertain goal with no clear roadmap to success.
