Meta launches new video cditing app "Edits" after CapCut ban

Meta has unveiled a new video editing app, Edits, which is set to launch next month on iOS, with an Android version to follow later, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

The announcement comes in the wake of ByteDance’s CapCut being removed from Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store as part of the broader TikTok ban.

Mosseri revealed the news on Threads, stating that Meta is collaborating with select creators to refine the app before its release. “Today we’re announcing a new app called ‘Edits,’ for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone. There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” he wrote.

Additionally, creators will be able to access performance insights for videos made through Edits once they are published on Instagram. Mosseri emphasized that the app is “more for creators than casual video makers,” signaling its focus on professional-grade tools and analytics.

Meta has a history of capitalizing on gaps in the market. When TikTok was banned in India in June 2020, Meta quickly launched Instagram Reels as a similar alternative. The company’s latest move appears to target creators seeking new tools in the wake of CapCut’s removal, while also positioning itself as a strong competitor in the video editing space.

Even if CapCut is reinstated, the uncertainty surrounding its availability has opened the door for alternatives like Edits. Earlier this month, the video editing app Captions, backed by venture firm a16z, adopted a freemium model to attract more users, signaling increased competition in the market.
