The European Union has launched an antitrust investigation into Meta over its use of AI features in WhatsApp, as Brussels intensifies scrutiny of United States tech giants.
The inquiry will assess whether Meta’s new policy granting AI providers access to WhatsApp potentially violates EU competition regulations, the EU announced Thursday.
“The claims are baseless,” a WhatsApp spokesperson told CNBC in a statement.
“The AI space is highly competitive and people have access to the services of their choice in any number of ways, including app stores, search engines, email services, partnership integrations and operating systems.”
This follows recent EU antitrust actions against other US tech giants.
Earlier this year, the European Commission fined Google €2.95 billion ($3.45 billion) for violating rules on online advertising.
In April, Apple was hit with a €500 million fine for breaching anti-steering obligations, while Meta faced a €200 million penalty for failing to give users the option of a service that uses less of their personal data.
