Mastercard empowers AI agents to shop, process payments for you

Mastercard launches CBDC Partner Program to foster crypto discussions

Mastercard Inc. announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Microsoft Corp. and other top artificial intelligence firms to empower AI agents to shop and process payments online for consumers.

The initiative, unveiled Tuesday, allows AI tools like Microsoft’s Copilot to autonomously search for products, present options, and complete purchases while suggesting optimal payment methods.

For instance, a consumer could task an AI agent with finding yellow running shoes in a specific size.

The agent would scour the web, offer tailored choices, and execute the transaction seamlessly, Mastercard said in a statement.

“Mastercard is transforming the way the world pays for the better by anticipating consumer needs on the horizon,” Jorn Lambert, Mastercard’s chief product officer, said in the statement.

The payments company said it’s also working with International Business Machines Corp. for business-to-business use cases.

While AI has made its way into different aspects of e-commerce, such as advertising, Mastercard’s program aims to minimize the time and effort spent searching for products.

The company said that AI agents won’t have full autonomy to make purchases, with consumers still making the final decision.

The payments company said it’s also working with International Business Machines Corp. for business-to-business use cases.

“The launch of Mastercard Agent Pay marks our initial steps in redefining commerce in the AI era, including new merchant interfaces to distinguish trusted agents from bad actors,” Lambert said.
