Makemation grosses N32.9m in first run at Nigerian cinemas

Makemation, a Nigerian film exploring themes of dreams, technology, and determination, has had a successful start at the local box office, earning N32.9 million in its first run.

It grossed N21.5 million over the opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) and reached a total of N32.9 million by Monday, reflecting strong audience engagement and interest, according to Nairametrics.

Makemation, directed by Michael Akinrogunde and produced by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji under Rise Interactive Studios, is being hailed as a landmark film in African cinema.

It stands out as the first African film to focus its narrative on Artificial Intelligence, blending this complex topic with a deeply emotional story about youth resilience and technological empowerment.

The central character, Zara Sodangi, is a 17-year-old girl from a disadvantaged community near Lagos.

Despite facing poverty, her father’s illness, and her mother’s struggles, Zara’s unwavering determination to pursue her dreams leads her to a life-changing opportunity: admission to the renowned Makemation Institute, Nigeria’s premier tech academy.

As Zara navigates the challenges of her new environment at the Makemation Institute, she transforms from feeling overwhelmed by AI’s complexity to using technology to tackle real-world issues in her community.

Her journey becomes one of discovery, growth, and empowerment.

Zara applies her experiences to create innovative solutions in health, education, and food security, ultimately becoming a symbol of hope and possibility for her people, as well as a champion for change.

Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji is a prominent Nigerian social entrepreneur and human development expert, recognized for her contributions across entrepreneurship, education, youth development, and public leadership.
