A widespread social media outage affected both Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday morning, leaving thousands of users unable to access key features of the platforms.
According to Downdetector, reports of issues with Instagram began surfacing around 9 a.m. ET, followed by similar complaints from Facebook users.
Instagram users reported that the outage primarily impacted the comments section of posts. Although stories and pictures still displayed comments, users were unable to view or interact with them.
“I see comments, but when I click on them, it says no comments, start the conversation. When I put a comment, it disappears,” one frustrated user shared. The issue appeared to be widespread, with users from across the United States—from the East Coast to the West—experiencing the same problem.
“Comments on posts are missing in Ohio. Anyone else?” a user asked on social media.
Similar reports also emerged from users in Utah and other states.
Many Facebook users reported being unable to log in. “I signed out a little while ago, and it was fine. Now I’m getting an error message trying to sign back in!” one Facebook user wrote.
Among the complaints, about one-third involved login issues, while others reported difficulties accessing the Facebook app and website even if they were already logged in.
On Instagram, over half of the reported problems involved the comments section, while 40% of users stated that the app was not functioning properly.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has yet to release an official statement addressing the cause of the disruption or when full service will be restored.
