LIRS extends individual tax filing deadline to April 14

LIRS sets January 31st deadline for filing tax returns

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service has extended the deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns for the 2025 year of assessment by two weeks.

Taxpayers now have until April 14, 2026, to submit their returns instead of the original statutory deadline of March 31, 2026.

LIRS Executive Chairman, Dr Ayodele Subair, announced the extension on Monday through a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Monsurat Amasa-Oyelude. The move is intended to give individuals more time to complete and submit accurate tax returns.

“The statutory deadline for filing of individual annual tax returns is March 31 every year,” Dr Subair explained, adding that the two-week extension will help improve compliance and reduce last-minute pressure on the e-filing system.

The agency emphasised that filing must be done electronically via the LIRS eTax platform, as manual submissions are no longer accepted. Taxpayers are advised to visit the official LIRS portal to file their returns and avoid penalties.

This extension applies only to individual taxpayers in Lagos State. Residents in other states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to adhere to the original March 31, 2026 deadline unless their respective revenue services announce similar extensions.

The development comes as many Lagos residents were still struggling to meet the initial deadline due to challenges with documentation, system access, and understanding the requirements under the new tax regime.
