Lenovo, Ericsson settle global patent dispute

Lenovo and Ericsson have reached a global patent cross-licensing agreement, bringing an end to a wide-ranging legal battle over wireless technology patents, the companies announced on Thursday.

The settlement resolves multiple lawsuits filed in jurisdictions around the world, including the UK, Brazil, Colombia, and the United States. The dispute centred on disagreements over fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms related to the licensing of patents covering 4G and 5G technologies.

Lenovo had launched legal action against Ericsson in London in 2023, one of several cases filed by either party in a prolonged standoff. Both companies have since agreed to enter binding arbitration to determine the final terms of their licensing arrangement.

In a statement, Ericsson confirmed the settlement and said the financial effects of the agreement would begin to be recognised in the second quarter of 2025, reflecting what it described as a “partial settlement.”

The announcement comes just days after Amazon and Nokia revealed they had also settled a separate global patent dispute, highlighting a broader trend of resolution among major tech firms amid rising litigation costs and regulatory pressure.
