The Lagos Waste Management Authority has removed street traders operating along road corridors and other unauthorised areas around Tafawa Balewa Square and the Costain Under Bridge/National Theatre axis.
The agency disclosed this in a statement on Saturday signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi.
LAWMA Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the enforcement was part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to improve environmental cleanliness, protect public spaces and ensure that roads, walkways and other public areas were used for their intended purposes.
He explained that the operation, carried out in collaboration with the Kick Against Indiscipline initiative, targeted street trading activities obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement and contributing to environmental nuisance along the affected corridors.
Gbadegesin warned traders against occupying road corridors, walkways and other unauthorised spaces, urging them to operate only in designated and approved trading areas.
The LAWMA boss stressed that maintaining orderly public spaces required sustained compliance with environmental regulations.
Gbadegesin said the agency would continue to collaborate with relevant government agencies to tackle activities that undermine environmental standards and public order.
The LAWMA boss urged residents and other stakeholders to support the enforcement efforts by complying with established regulations and refraining from activities that obstruct public spaces or contribute to environmental degradation.
He added that the agency would continue to monitor the affected areas to prevent the return of illegal trading activities and ensure sustained compliance with environmental regulations.
