The Lagos State Government has closed the Ladipo Spare Parts Market on Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway due to repeated environmental violations.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the closure in a post on X on Sunday.
The move is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to tackle environmental degradation and curb illegal activities along major roads.
Wahab stated that the market was closed due to repeated cases of indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal street trading along the highway.
“Lagos State government, this morning, sealed Ladipo Spare Parts Market along Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road (Apapa–Oshodi Expressway) over repeated environmental infractions; indiscriminate refuse disposal on the median/highway and illegal street trading. #ZeroToleranceLagos,” he posted.
Authorities said the closure is part of efforts to enforce environmental laws and clear the highway corridor.
Ladipo Spare Parts Market, located in Mushin, is one of Nigeria’s largest automobile spare parts hubs, attracting traders and buyers from across the country and other neighboring West African countries.
The Lagos State Government recently shut the market, citing repeated environmental violations.
Wahab said the closure followed persistent indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal street trading along the highway corridor.
The action aims to enforce environmental regulations and restore order along the highway.
This is not the first time authorities have intervened; past closures of the market were carried out for similar issues, including reckless waste disposal, obstruction of traffic, unhygienic conditions, and non-payment of waste bills, with reopenings allowed once compliance requirements were met.
