The Lagos State Government plans to add electric-powered boats to the Lagos Ferry Services fleet this year, aiming to lower fares for commuters.
The Managing Director of LAGFERRY,
Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi-Balogun, made this disclosure in a statement on the Lagos State Government’s X account on Wednesday.
The move is part of a push for affordable, sustainable, and eco-friendly water transport, while also addressing rising travel costs and traffic congestion.
Balogun noted that electric vessels have lower operating and maintenance costs, enabling LAGFERRY to offer reduced fares for passengers.
He added that the initiative is both environmentally responsible and economically essential.
“The Lagos State Government (LASG) plans to introduce electric-powered boats into the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) fleet within the year, as part of its commitment to providing affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly public transportation,” the statement read in part.
He also highlighted the growing popularity of water transport among Lagos residents. Since February 4, 2020, LAGFERRY has carried 4.4 million passengers.
Balogun described this trend as the “Watermania Lifestyle,” where commuters leave their cars at jetties and opt to travel by boat.
He revealed that LAGFERRY has recorded a tenfold increase in trips, with residents using the waterways to reach beach houses and coastal resorts.
The plan to introduce electric boats this year aligns with Lagos State’s drive for sustainable, electric-powered water transport.
Part of this vision is the Omi Eko Project, a €410 million electric water transport initiative launched in October 2025, designed to transform mobility across the Lagos Lagoon.
