A recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics has revealed that between 2019 and 2021, registration with the National Identity Management Commission was highest in Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna.
The data states that Lagos state had the most registrations in 2019 with 560,757, followed by Kano with 485,912 and Kaduna state with 595,284. Lagos topped the list of states that granted the most National Identity numbers and registrations in 2020.
However, in 2021, Kaduna had 1,434,331 more registrations than Lagos (3,002,693) or Kano (3,415,421). In total, 5.84 million individuals signed up for NIN in 2019.
To slightly over 5 million in 2020, the number fell by 14.03%. The number of registrations and NINs granted climbed by 439.12% to slightly over 27 million in 2021, showing a northward trend.
This may be related to a Federal government directive issued in December 2020 requiring citizens to provide their NIN to carriers for quick synchronization.
Between 2019 and 2021, over 37,906,617 million persons received NINs and were registered in total.
In 2019, compared to women, more men registered for NIN. Men made up 52.58% of registrants compared to women’s 42.41%. Women made up 45.23% of the population in 2020, while males made up 54.27%.
In 2021, women made up 47.41% of the approximately 27.05 million persons who enrolled for NIN, while men made up 52.59% of the population.
The only state in 2019 where women outnumbered males in registration was Osun. However, in 2020, more women in Akwa-Ibom, Ekiti, Kwara, and Zamfara received NIN numbers. The gap between men and women in Ogun state was only a few hundred.
In 14 states (Abia, Ekiti, Kwara, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Borno, Ogun, Oyo, and Osun), women outnumbered men in 2021 when they enrolled for the NIN.
Surprisingly, Lagos was the only state in the South-West where there were more males than women registering for NINs in 2021.
