Smart Gas Company Limited announced a collaboration with Odiolowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Ilupeju in Lagos State, to promote a cleaner environment and reduce gas emissions into the atmosphere.

According to The Punch, the firm said in a statement on Tuesday that the action also guarantees the protection of the ozone layer and prevents the effects of climate change.

According to the statement, the firm plans to accomplish this by encouraging the use of cooking gas as a safer alternative to kerosene, firewood, and charcoal.

The company would exchange waste for around 370 gas cookers, which would be distributed to some local government households.

The firm’s chief executive officer, Dr. Yinka Opeke, stated that Smart Gas is deeply committed to protecting the environment and that, as a responsible company, it is concerned about the effects of climate change.

“In addition to providing petrol cylinders, we are working with the government to establish recycling facilities through the Lagos State Waste Management Agency. Additionally, we are eager to cooperate with any private organizations who want to address environmental issues with us.”

According to Opeke, environmental issues in the country are endangering peoples’ quality of life and ability to support themselves.

In a separate speech, the chairman of the Odiolowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Rasaq Ajala, expressed appreciation for the partnership with Smart Gas, particularly the distribution of about 370 gas cylinders that had already been filled to local residents in exchange for waste in an effort to reduce the use of firewood, kerosene and charcoal.

He praised the firm for its generosity in giving the gas cylinders in their initial phase.

He expressed the hope that the action will significantly contribute to the area’s environmental stability and garbage-free drainage systems.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, represented by the Director, of Monitoring, Compliance and Enforcement who doubles as Acting General Manager, of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Kayode Bello said wastes should be separated from plastics, bottles, and food waste from home with the realization that wastes can be converted to wealth which many people can take advantage of.
