The Lagos State Government has announced an extension of the amnesty period for owners and developers of buildings lacking Planning Permits, now set to expire on December 31, 2024.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this disclosure at the recent Lagos Physical Planning Summit held at Eko Hotels and Suites via the official X account of Lagos State.
This extension offers property owners in Lagos State a valuable opportunity to secure the necessary approvals for their buildings without incurring penalties or additional costs.
A part of the statement read, “For another period of two months, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has extended the amnesty period granted to owners and developers of existing buildings without Planning Permit to December 31, 2024.
“The additional grace period was announced by Mr. Governor during the recently concluded Lagos Physical Planning Summit held at Eko Hotel and Suites.”
This marks the second extension of the amnesty period approved by Governor Sanwo-Olu.
Originally, the amnesty was set for a 90-day window from May 2 to July 30, 2024, but it was subsequently extended until October.
With this latest extension, property owners now have until the end of the year to comply with planning regulations, allowing them additional time to regularize their developments without facing penalties.
During the Summit, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the December 31 deadline is intended to encourage more property owners and developers to obtain the necessary planning approvals.
He emphasized that the amnesty program is part of broader efforts to alleviate economic pressures in the built environment sector while promoting adherence to Physical Planning Regulations, ultimately aiming to create a more organized, livable, and sustainable Lagos.
The statement also revealed that Governor Sanwo-Olu launched the Physical Planning Permit Barcode for Lagos State during the event.
This new barcode will be issued to buildings that successfully obtain Planning Permits, providing a quick and convenient method for regulatory officers to verify permits at a glance.
By affixing the barcode to approved structures, the government aims to minimize unwarranted interference from officials, thereby enhancing transparency and accountability in the approval process.
The Governor further emphasized the significance of the Physical Planning Summit, describing it as a crucial step toward transforming Lagos into a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable 21st-century megacity.
