The Lagos State Government has attributed the delay in opening the Opebi-Odoiya Alaro Bridge to the installation of an additional steel monument, assuring motorists that the bridge will be opened to traffic before Christmas.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this in a statement issued by the state government on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
The governor said the 25-metre steel monument, introduced towards the final stage of the project, was about 80 per cent complete, with the remaining installation work to be concluded before the bridge opens to motorists.
The delay followed the failure to meet an earlier target of opening the bridge by the end of September.
Sanwo-Olu assured motorists that the Opebi-Odoiya Alaro Bridge would be opened to traffic before Christmas, adding that the outstanding work on the steel monument was expected to be completed in the coming days.
As of Sunday, installation of the monument was about 80 per cent complete, with three of its four steel hands already assembled and installed. Work on the final component was expected to begin shortly, followed by the addition of other planned features to complete the structure.
“In a recent media gathering, I mentioned that the newly completed Opebi-Odoiya Alaro Bridge would be open to traffic at the end of September based on the work plan I was briefed. But, we are approaching the end of October and the work is yet to be completed.
“As a responsible Governor, I needed to come and find out personally what caused the delay and the issues around the work,” the governor said.
“The Governor assured Lagosians that the bridge would be part of the infrastructure that would be used during the Yuletide,” the statement added.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the monument was not part of the bridge’s original design but was introduced during the final stage of construction, delaying its opening to motorists.
