The Lagos State Government has confirmed that work on the $3 billion Green Line rail project, which will link Marina to the Lekki corridor, is set to commence in December 2025.

The announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement shared on the official X account of the Lagos State Government on Monday.

Osiyemi highlighted that comprehensive feasibility studies and consultations with stakeholders along the Lekki-Epe corridor have been completed in preparation for the project.

The rail project is projected to take two to three years to complete and will be rolled out in phases. The first phase will span from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe, while the second phase, beginning at Marina, will include a segment over water.

“The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi remarked that the government had done a lot of stakeholder engagements as well as a lot of feasibility studies along the Lekki-Epe Expressway Corridor because the Green Line project will commence in December.

“He explained that the Green Line project would take about two to three years and would begin from Marina all the way to Epe, saying the projects would come in phases, with the first phase from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe and the second Phase from Marina would be on the water,” the statement read in part.

The announcement comes after heightened enforcement along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, where authorities have removed encroachments and restored wetlands critical to the Green Line’s right-of-way.

Stretching 70 kilometres from Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, the Green Line will feature 17 stations along a combination of elevated and at-grade tracks. The route starts at Marina, passes through Victoria Island, follows the Lekki-Epe Expressway, and continues through Ajah, Sangotedo, and the Lekki Free Zone.

Stations along the Green Line will feature modern designs, including pedestrian bridges, elevators, and escalators, with a depot located near Sangotedo and a 15-hectare parking facility at the Lekki Free Zone.

Trains will run in eight-car B-type sets, capable of speeds up to 100 km/h, with a minimum headway of three minutes and a projected capacity of 35,000 passengers per hour per direction.

On April 9, 2025, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority released a video outlining the Green Line project, highlighting its estimated $3 billion cost, route alignments, and design features.
