Lagos bans street traders from Eko, Babangida bridge, other areas

The Lagos State Government has declared zero tolerance for street traders in Lagos state, particularly on the Third Mainland Bridge and Eko Bridge.

This information was released in a press statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 as he read the riot act to street traders in Lagos state, 

Gaji maintained that the state government’s action is in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda, which aims to promote a cleaner and more aesthetic environment in Lagos, ensure comprehensive enforcement of environmental sanitation laws, and build a safer State for all.

Gaji has warned that not only will all commodities hawked and displayed on main roads be confiscated, but anyone caught will face punishment in Mobile Courts in line with State Environmental rules.

The Permanent Secretary stated that as a megacity on the verge of becoming a smart city, Lagos has no room for street traders who not only detract from the aesthetics of the city and expose themselves to dangerous situations but also pose a threat to the security of lives and property.

He emphasized that this enforcement which will be carried out by a special task force of the Kick Against Indiscipline and other enforcement agencies will go after anyone found engaging in prohibited acts such as street trading, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and hawking.

Gaji stated that following the directive will result in a cleaner and safer environment for everybody, as the State would no longer accept any act of indiscipline, hooliganism, or violence that could disrupt the State’s existing tranquility.
