Legendary Japanese video game creator Hideo Kojima said Thursday that he had partnered with Microsoft’s Xbox for his next project after Sony canceled its development for the PlayStation console.
Kojima, whose pioneering Metal Gear spy-action franchise has played a major role in PlayStation’s success since the 1990s, had been developing a new project titled PHYSINT with the company.
However, the 63-year-old game developer said on X that PlayStation Studios unexpectedly notified him in mid-June that it would cancel the PHYSINT project.
PlayStation did not provide a reason for the cancellation, saying only in a post on X on Thursday that it had decided to end the project.
“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint.”
“We have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner,” Kojima said, adding that Xbox and his studio shared a “common vision.”
Kojima’s post-apocalyptic game, Death Stranding 2, was among the top contenders at last year’s Game Awards in Los Angeles, while PHYSINT had been described as a return to his roots in the spy-game genre.
“Development of Physint, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward,” Kojima said.
He did not provide a release date or confirm whether the game would be exclusive to Xbox consoles.
