Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, paid an emergency visit to Murtala Muhammed International Airport late Monday night after a fire outbreak occurred at the airport’s old Terminal 1.
Keyamo revealed via his X handle on Tuesday morning that he arrived shortly before midnight and immediately joined the leadership of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria as they coordinated containment efforts.
The minister praised airport workers and responders for acting quickly.
“I commend FAAN personnel and first responders for their swift activation of established emergency procedures. Their prompt and coordinated actions were instrumental in safeguarding lives and limiting the impact of the incident,” he said.
He added that he ordered both the FAAN Fire Department and the Lagos State Fire Service to maintain strict overnight surveillance to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
“I have directed the fire department of FAAN and the Lagos State Fire Service to maintain an overnight vigil at the airport to ensure that the fire is properly put out,” the minister noted.
Keyamo stated that he would return at dawn to inspect the damaged terminal and issue follow-up directives.
“At daybreak, I will be touring the airport to assess the extent of damage and give necessary instructions,” he added.
The incident occurred in the old terminal, which is currently undergoing renovation to modernise airport facilities and improve passenger experience.
Speaking to PUNCH Online, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, confirmed the situation was under control.
“We are aware of the outbreak, and we are there right now. Our firefighting team is responding and working to curtail the situation,” he said.
Agbebire also assured the public that no casualties had been recorded.
“No loss of lives has been reported. Further updates will be provided,” he added.
Passengers have been urged to stay calm while officials complete safety checks and assess the full extent of the damage.
