Japa: US cancels over 6,000 international student visas

The US State Department has canceled over 6,000 international student visas due to alleged violations of U.S. laws, overstaying, and terrorism-related issues.

The BBC reports that most of the cases involved offenses including assault, driving under the influence, burglary, and “support for terrorism.”

Around 4,000 of the revoked visas were due to general violations of U.S. law, while 200 to 300 were specifically canceled under Section 3B of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which broadly defines “terrorist activity” as acts that threaten human life or breach American law.

The move is part of the Trump administration’s broader crackdown on immigration and student visas.

While the State Department did not provide a specific definition of “support for terrorism,” the administration has recently targeted international students who took part in pro-Palestine protests, accusing them of antisemitic behavior.

The U.S. resumed visa appointments for international students in June following a temporary suspension, but applicants were required to make their social media accounts public for enhanced screening.

The State Department said the checks are aimed at identifying “any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States”.
