In response to a growing shortage of skilled workers, the Italian government is taking significant steps to simplify the application process for foreigners seeking temporary work visas.
The plan includes increasing the number of days each year when applications can be submitted, referred to as “Click Days,” to better align with employer needs.
Recent reports from TravelBiz indicate that current visa quotas and deadlines have proven inadequate for addressing labor demands. Secretary of Cgil, Maria Grazia Gabrielli, emphasized the necessity of moving beyond the restricted “click day” system to meet the country’s actual workforce needs.
Despite these adjustments, the government will not alter the Bossi-Fini Law, which mandates that foreign nationals secure a job offer prior to entry. This law includes stricter requirements for residence permits and penalties for employers hiring undocumented workers.
Additionally, concerns over visa fraud and exploitation by organized crime have prompted revisions to ensure tighter oversight. Prime Minister Meloni highlighted the issue of criminal gangs abusing seasonal work visas, underscoring the urgency for reform in the application process to protect foreign workers and the integrity of the labor market.
