Iran denies US talks, accuses Trump of oil market manipulation

Iran has firmly denied engaging in any negotiations with the United States. This directly contradicts claims by US President Donald Trump that both nations recently held productive conversations.

In a statement issued on Monday, Iran’s foreign ministry insisted that no discussions are taking place between Tehran and Washington. It dismissed Trump’s remarks as a strategic move aimed at influencing global energy prices while buying time for possible military actions, according to Iranian media.

“There are no talks between Tehran and Washington,” the Mehr news agency quoted the foreign ministry as saying. It added that Trump’s comments were part of a push “to reduce energy prices”.

While rejecting any direct engagement with the US, Iran acknowledged that some countries in the region have floated proposals aimed at easing tensions.

“We are not the party that started this war, and all such demands should be directed to Washington,” the statement added.

Tehran has continued to respond with drone and missile strikes targeting Gulf neighbours. These actions have caused casualties and damaged key infrastructure.

These retaliatory attacks have also disrupted global markets and aviation. They typically follow strikes on Iranian facilities by the US and Israel.

On March 19, Iran’s counterattack after Israel struck a major gas field significantly impacted Qatar’s liquefied natural gas exports. It knocked out 17 percent of its capacity and resulted in an estimated $20 billion in annual revenue losses.

Iran has also warned that it could “irreversibly destroy” critical infrastructure across the Middle East, including essential water systems. This warning comes if the US carries out Trump’s threat to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants, unless the Strait of Hormuz is fully reopened within two days.

Earlier, Trump announced a five-day suspension of planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. He cited what he described as “very good and productive” engagements with Tehran.

“I am pleased to report that the United States of America and the country of Iran have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social.
