Instagram is launching a new “profile card” feature, functioning as a digital business card for users after testing phase with select creators earlier this year.
The innovative two-sided profile cards aim to simplify how users share their Instagram accounts. Instead of sending someone your handle, you can now share the card directly, making it easier to connect with new people and build friendships.
One side of the card showcases information from your Instagram profile, including your bio, profile picture, and any links or music you’ve added. The reverse side features a QR code that links directly to your profile. Users can also customize the background with a personal image to express themselves more creatively.
The feature, which is being rolled out globally, targets individuals looking to enhance their personal branding and expand their networks. Users can share their profile cards on other platforms, encouraging others to visit and follow their accounts.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, shared with TechCrunch that the feature responds to the growing trend among Gen Z users, many of whom are using Instagram as a digital resume. A recent survey indicated that over half of Gen Zers aspire to become influencers, prompting the platform to provide tools that help them effectively showcase themselves.
Instagram believes the profile card can facilitate connections with potential collaborators and brands, as well as help users make new friends with similar interests by sharing their cards in Instagram groups or during online events.
While Instagram has allowed QR code sharing since 2018, the new profile cards offer a more comprehensive way to connect. Rather than just a simple QR code, the profile card provides insight into users’ interests and content, fostering deeper connections than traditional methods.
