Instagram enhances content restrictions for teens in India

Instagram developing ‘Picks’ feature to connect users over shared interests

Instagram has expanded its redesigned Teen Accounts feature in India, introducing tighter content controls aligned with standards for films rated 13+.

The move is aimed at ensuring that young users are shown age-appropriate content by default.

With the update, all users under 18 will automatically be placed in the revised 13+ content category.

Teens will not be able to adjust this setting themselves and will need parental approval to make any changes.

The updated Teen Account settings are currently being rolled out in India, with plans to extend them to other countries soon.

Meta Platforms Inc., Instagram’s parent company, said the goal is to create an experience similar to watching a movie intended for teenagers.

While mild suggestive material or occasional strong language may still appear, the company says it is working to keep such content to a minimum.

Instagram has also strengthened its content moderation policies to better shield younger users.

Beyond existing limits on adult material, sexually suggestive posts, and graphic imagery, the platform will now further restrict content containing strong language, dangerous stunts, or material that may promote harmful behaviour.
