Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has shattered records in animated cinema, surpassing $1.46 billion in global box office sales since its release last month, solidifying its status as the highest-grossing animated film to date.
Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel has outperformed previous benchmarks, notably surpassing Barbie’s $1.44 billion to claim the top spot in animated movie history, according to global box office records.
Following a six-week theatrical run, “Inside Out 2” achieved this milestone with $861 million from international markets and $601 million domestically in the United States. In Nigeria alone, the film has grossed N40 million, maintaining a strong presence since its debut on June 14, 2024, where it earned N24.2 million within its first 10 days.
The production, which cost approximately $200 million, twice that of its predecessor, has also surpassed records set by “Frozen II” ($1.45 billion), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion), and the original “Frozen” ($1.29 billion).
Starring a diverse cast including Nigerian-Barbadian Ayo Edebiri as Envy, the film delves into the mind of teenager Riley, exploring new emotions like Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui alongside familiar characters Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust.
“Inside Out 2” made headlines earlier this year by crossing the $1 billion mark within just 19 days of release, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film and surpassing the global earnings of its predecessor, “Inside Out.”
With its blend of humor and emotional depth, the sequel has not only captivated audiences but also sparked significant cultural discussions, making it a standout success in animated filmmaking.
