Ikorodu ferry terminal to reopen after prolonged hyacinth blockage

The Ikorodu Ferry Terminal is set to resume passenger services on Monday, January 19, 2026, after being closed for several months due to heavy water hyacinth that obstructed navigation.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority confirmed this in a statement released on Friday.

The terminal had remained closed since October 20, 2025, when the widespread infestation made ferry operations unsafe.

According to LASWA, the terminal was temporarily shut on October 20, 2025, after water hyacinth rendered navigation unsafe.

During the closure, ferry operations were redirected to the Ibeshe Terminal and Offin Jetty to ensure continued, though limited, passenger services.

LASWA said the terminal has now been cleared for full operations following the successful removal of the hyacinth and the completion of safety assessments.

“This is to inform all ferry operators and terminal users that the Ikorodu Ferry Terminal will reopen for passenger ferry operations with effect from Monday, 19 January 2026.

“The terminal was closed on Monday, 20 October 2025 due to navigational concerns caused by water hyacinth infestation, and services were temporarily diverted to Ibeshe Terminal and Offin Jetty,” the statement read in part.

LASWA added that consultations were held with the National Inland Waterways Authority ahead of the resumption of services.

The authority directed all ferry operators to return to normal operations in line with approved schedules, while strictly adhering to safety and operational guidelines.

It was had earlier reported on the impact of water hyacinth across Lagos inland waterways, noting that commuters and operators have faced persistent challenges from dense mats that block channels and entangle boat propellers.

Commuters and operators have long faced difficulties due to dense mats of water hyacinth that obstruct waterways and entangle boat propellers.
