The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has cleared BON Bread producer, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, of any regulatory violation after viral claims alleged that the product had an unusually long shelf life.
The agency said in a statement on Sunday that the decision followed a scientific investigation initiated in April 2026 after concerns circulated on social media.
It added that the findings were based on laboratory tests and inspections of the company’s facilities and production processes.
NAFDAC confirmed that BON Bread producer, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, fully complied with all food safety regulations following a detailed scientific review.
The agency stated that its investigation found no breach of approved standards governing bread production in Nigeria.
“The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has concluded investigations into public concerns regarding the extended shelf life of BON Bread and confirmed that the manufacturer, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, is in compliance with regulatory standards,” the statement read.
NAFDAC said it conducted a full inspection of Food & Food Integrated Company Limited’s Abuja facility and also collected samples from production sites and open markets for laboratory testing.
The agency reported that calcium propionate, a permitted bread preservative under Codex Alimentarius, was detected within approved safety limits.
It further confirmed that no harmful or prohibited substances, including bromate or non-nutritive sweeteners, were found in any of the samples analysed.
NAFDAC said its findings addressed concerns raised by the viral allegation and confirmed that the product complies with established safety standards.
The probe was triggered by a social media post on April 13, 2026, which claimed that a loaf of bread remained mould-free for over two months, raising questions about the use of chemical preservatives.
While the brand was not initially disclosed, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited later identified the product as BON Bread and said the claim was misleading.
NAFDAC also stated that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited has maintained regulatory compliance since commencing operations in 2006, including successful licence renewals and no history of sanctions or product recalls.
The agency cautioned against drawing conclusions from unverified social media content, emphasising that only scientific testing can determine food safety. It also urged consumers to report concerns through official regulatory channels for proper investigation.
