Hybrid Motors Nigeria has secured investment commitments worth about $95 million to develop electric vehicle manufacturing plants and a nationwide charging infrastructure network, marking one of the most significant private-sector clean mobility initiatives proposed in Nigeria.
The investment stems from two strategic agreements signed in China by the company.
The first partnership, with automotive engineering firm Launch Design Shanghai, will support the establishment of EV manufacturing facilities in Lagos and Abuja, according to Nairametrics.
The second agreement, signed with a Chinese charging infrastructure provider, focuses on rolling out large-scale EV charging stations across the country.
Speaking the Chief Executive Officer of Hybrid Motors Nigeria, Jubril Arogundade, said the initiative is aimed at transforming Nigeria’s electric mobility landscape from dependence on vehicle imports and pilot projects to large-scale local production backed by critical infrastructure.
Arogundade disclosed that the manufacturing plants are expected to attract about $75 million in investment, while an additional $20 million will be committed to the deployment of charging stations nationwide, bringing the total project value to approximately $95 million.
The development aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen domestic vehicle manufacturing under the National Automotive Industry Development Plan and advance the adoption of cleaner transportation technologies.
Under an agreement signed with Launch Design Shanghai on May 8, 2026, the partners plan to establish production facilities in Lagos and Abuja with a combined annual manufacturing capacity of 70,000 vehicles when fully operational.
The Lagos plant, to be situated within the Lekki Free Trade Zone, will serve as the flagship production hub and is projected to produce up to 50,000 vehicles annually.
The Abuja plant, situated within the Centenary City Free Zone, is projected to have an annual production capacity of 20,000 vehicles.
Arogundade said land has already been secured for both manufacturing sites, with construction work currently in progress.
The company is targeting the first quarter of 2027 for the official unveiling of the facilities.
“The factory will be launched early next year by Q1 2027. The land has been secured and we are building now,” he said.
Although the facilities are expected to scale up to full production capacity over the next decade, Hybrid Motors aims to commence operations with an initial output of 7,000 vehicles in its first year.
