The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has denounced Tinubu’s declaration to eliminate fuel subsidy, saying it is autocratic and unlawful.
Arise News reported that the national coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, criticized the decision to end fuel subsidies in a statement as being careless, foolish, and insensitive.
The rights organization asked the labor movement and civil rights organizations to put together Nigerian workers and all of the country’s proletariat to go on an indefinite strike and engage in acts of civil disobedience if Tinubu does not change his mind.
HURIWA questioned how the new president intends to start his administration by imposing drastic economic measures like the harsh elimination of fuel subsidies, “which will lead to the skyrocketing of purchasing prices of goods and services in Nigeria.”
HURIWA expressed dismay that “President Tinubu has added fuel to the fire” rather than addressing the issues, “when 100 million households are absolutely poor.”
HURIWA cautioned that if the elimination of fuel subsidies wasn’t stopped right away, it is likely to spark an angry rebellion.
According to HURIWA: “When 100 million households are absolutely poor, President Tinubu rather than ameliorate the problems has added fuel to the fire.”
