A Bloomberg News journalist in Hong Kong announced on Saturday that she is leaving the city after authorities refused to renew her work visa, according to the Foreign Correspondents’ Club.
Rebecca Choong Wilkins, Bloomberg’s Asia government and economy correspondent, wrote on social media: “After six years of reporting in Hong Kong, and at eight months pregnant, I’m very sad to be leaving my colleagues, friends, and the place I’ve called home.”
“I’ll be out of the office for a while on maternity leave. Wherever I land, catch you on the other side.”
“We cannot comment on the specifics of her situation but we fully support Rebecca and we will continue to work through the appropriate avenues to try to resolve the matter,” a Bloomberg News spokesperson said.
Hong Kong’s Immigration Department declined to comment on the case when contacted by AFP, saying only that it handles applications “in accordance with the laws and policies” governing immigration matters.
The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Hong Kong said Friday it was “deeply concerned” about the situation, noting that authorities had provided no explanation for the visa denial.
“This decision and the lack of explanation reinforce widespread concerns about the erosion of press freedom in Hong Kong,” it noted.
Media reports noted that last year authorities also rejected an Associated Press photojournalist, Louise Delmotte’s, visa extension request without providing any explanation.
