The well-known hacktivist collective Anonymous Sudan has taken notice of Nigeria’s recent engagement in the political crisis in nearby Niger.
The organisation has admitted that it was behind a string of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) assaults on the nation’s digital infrastructure.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), a government organisation, verified this claim.
The NITDA said in a news release that it had discovered hacktivist activity aimed against the country’s digital assets.
“The hacktivist group, known for its politically and religiously motivated cyber campaigns poses a significant risk to our country’s critical information infrastructure. The agency further offered Nigerians insights into the group’s method of operations. Their tactics include targeted attacks on government digital services, using various attack types, particularly DDoS attacks, and they have a track record of successful attacks in other countries,” NITDA stated.
It’s important to note that the NITDA omitted to identify the precise group in charge.
The group issued a number of notifications yesterday addressing the popular telecom firm MTN’s service interruption.
Similar to the ongoing attacks in Kenya last week, Anonymous Sudan posted updates on the attacks on its own Telegram channel.
The group exchanged screenshots of users complaining about the unreliable network. On Telegram, it stated: “We have confirmed from people inside Nigeria and Twitter that they’re going crazy over the MTN network going down.”
The group claimed that Nigerians will have trouble utilising the telco’s mobile application and website. Customer service desks, bank top-ups, and recharge line systems are some of the other services that are impacted.
