Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is taking a significant step forward in the chatbot race with the rollout of a new “memory” feature for its Grok assistant. This feature brings xAI closer to competitors like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Announced Wednesday evening, the update allows Grok to retain information from previous conversations, enabling it to deliver more personalized responses over time. For example, if a user frequently asks for restaurant recommendations or news summaries, Grok can tailor its replies based on learned preferences—assuming the user engages with the bot enough for it to build a memory profile.
Similar memory functions have long been offered by ChatGPT, which recently expanded its capabilities to incorporate a user’s full chat history. Google’s Gemini also features persistent memory to customize its interactions.
“Memories are transparent,” the official Grok account posted on X, formerly Twitter. “You can see exactly what Grok knows and choose what to forget.”
The memory feature is currently in beta and available on Grok.com, as well as the Grok apps for iOS and Android. However, it is not yet accessible to users in the European Union or United Kingdom.
Users can disable the function through the Data Controls section in settings, and individual memory entries can be deleted directly from the chat interface—currently on the web and coming soon to Android.
xAI says it is also working to integrate memory into the Grok experience on X in the near future.
