Grammarly acquires Superhuman to bolster AI-powered productivity suite

Writing assistant platform Grammarly has acquired Superhuman, a high-performance email tool, as part of its strategic push to expand into artificial intelligence-powered productivity software.

The deal marks a significant step in Grammarly’s efforts to diversify beyond its core grammar-checking services. While the San Francisco-based companies did not disclose the transaction’s value, Superhuman was last valued at $825 million in 2021 and currently generates about $35 million in annual revenue.

Grammarly, which raised $1 billion in funding last year from General Catalyst, now boasts over 40 million daily users and annual revenue exceeding $700 million. The acquisition follows its 2023 purchase of productivity startup Coda and signals continued momentum toward creating a suite of AI-powered workplace tools. According to CEO Shishir Mehrotra, a rebrand is also underway as the company looks to reposition itself in the broader enterprise tech landscape.

Founded in 2014, Superhuman has raised more than $110 million from backers including Andreessen Horowitz and IVP. The app is known for its minimalist design and time-saving email features, with its AI tools helping users send and reply to 72% more emails per hour. However, competition in the AI email space has intensified, with major players like Google and Microsoft ramping up similar offerings.

“Email is still the most-used work app, and foundational to productivity,” Mehrotra said. “Superhuman is a clear innovator in that space.”

Under the deal, Superhuman’s CEO Rahul Vohra and more than 100 employees will join Grammarly. Vohra stated that the acquisition will provide the resources needed to accelerate the company’s expansion into calendar management, task coordination, and team collaboration tools.

Both companies envision a future where Grammarly’s AI agents are embedded directly within Superhuman, enabling professionals to automate tasks and retrieve information across emails and documents seamlessly.

The move positions Grammarly to compete with enterprise giants like Salesforce and a growing number of AI productivity startups.
