Governor Otti urges swift action on Aba-Umuahia-Enugu rail project

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has called on the Nigerian Railway Corporation to expedite the rehabilitation of the Aba-Umuahia-Enugu rail corridor, describing the project as crucial to revitalising transportation and boosting economic growth across the South-East.

Governor Otti made the appeal on Wednesday during a meeting with a delegation from the NRC, led by its newly appointed Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa. The governor emphasised the transformative role of efficient transport systems in national development, stating that transportation remains a key driver of economic progress.

While lamenting the slow pace of work on the Aba-Enugu section—originally slated for completion in the first quarter of 2024—Otti expressed confidence that progress would accelerate under Opeifa’s leadership.

“I have no doubt that the ideas which have been delayed will be brought to life under your watch. The speed of execution we witnessed in other sections needs to be replicated here,” he said.

Addressing concerns over the security of NRC assets in Aba, Governor Otti assured the delegation of his administration’s full support, including logistical assistance. He reiterated that his government does not distinguish between federal and state projects when it comes to development, and is open to partnerships that benefit Abia.

The governor also revealed ongoing efforts to modernise the state’s transport system, hinting at plans to replicate the integrated transport model of Paddington Station in the UK.

“We envision an Umuahia where trains, buses, and other transport services converge seamlessly. Paddington never sleeps, and that’s the kind of vibrant hub we want to build here,” Otti said.

In his remarks, NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa said the meeting was aimed at strengthening collaboration towards reviving the Aba-Umuahia rail line. He noted that the NRC is committed to reducing the cost of goods and services by enhancing rail connectivity, especially across major South-East cities.

The meeting also featured a presentation by Kingsley Agomoh, General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, detailing progress on the construction of the Umuahia Railway and Bus Terminal.
