Google is gaining ground in generative AI as its Gemini app topped Apple’s App Store this week, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The surge follows last month’s release of Gemini’s “2.5 Flash Image” model, which introduced Nano Banana, a feature that lets users blend photos and generate digital figurines.
The update drew 13 million new users and pushed total uploads to more than 500 million images, according to Josh Woodward, head of the Gemini app.
Demand was so strong that temporary usage limits were put in place.
As of July, Gemini had more than 450 million monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai said during Alphabet’s second-quarter earnings.
On Monday, Alphabet joined Nvidia, Microsoft, and Apple in the $3 trillion market cap club, buoyed by investor enthusiasm for AI and a favorable antitrust ruling protecting its Chrome browser.
