Google, at CES 2025, introduced the latest version of its TV operating system, featuring an innovative news summary tool powered by the company’s Gemini AI assistant.
The new “News Brief” feature allows users to catch up on the day’s biggest stories by simply asking Gemini to play their news brief. The AI assistant will then pull headlines from trusted news outlets and YouTube channels, generating a concise summary of the top news events.
Google plans to roll out these Gemini AI capabilities for both new and existing Google TV devices by the end of 2025.
This move marks a significant step for Google into the increasingly contentious space of AI-generated news summaries. The tech industry has been facing legal challenges, with companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Perplexity being sued by media organizations over concerns that AI tools are using their content without proper licensing or attribution.
Despite the challenges, the push for AI-driven news summaries continues. Companies like Apple and Google have encountered backlash from errors in their AI systems—Apple’s AI mistakenly misreported a BBC article about tennis star Rafael Nadal, while Google’s Gemini AI has been criticized for generating false or misleading information in the past, including suggesting users put glue on their pizza.
While Google had previously avoided incorporating AI news summaries into its products, opting instead to direct users to Google Search, the company is now embracing Gemini for this task. Notably, the News Brief feature does not display the sources of the content it summarizes, though it does include related YouTube videos.
The News Brief is part of Google’s broader vision for an interactive TV experience. Future Google TVs will feature sensors to detect when users enter a room, and users will be able to ask their TVs to search for shows, movies, or YouTube videos using natural language.
