The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai has disclosed to employees in a memo that more layoffs are anticipated this year.
This comes after the layoff of over 1,000 people across several departments last week and the slashing of 100 jobs at YouTube, Pichai’s message warned the firm will have to make “tough choices” to accomplish its ambitious goals, as reported by The Verge.
The CEO stated that this year’s layoffs won’t be as severe as those from the previous year, when the business let go of 12,000 employees, or 6% of its total staff.
“These role eliminations are not at the scale of last year’s reductions, and will not touch every team. But I know it’s very difficult to see colleagues and teams impacted,” he said in an email to Googlers.
“Many of these changes are already announced, though to be upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted.”
Over 1,000 employees were let go by Google in a recent round of layoffs that affected many areas, including hardware, engineering, advertisements, and services. Along with confirming Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman’s departure, the company also revealed to TechCrunch that more than 100 YouTube employees were laid go on Wednesday as part of an organizational restructure.
