Google Maps is introducing a new AI-powered feature called Ask Maps, which integrates conversational capabilities driven by Google Gemini directly into the navigation app.
The feature allows users to ask questions in natural language rather than manually searching for locations, providing contextual responses that combine navigation, local discovery, and recommendations.
The feature effectively transforms Maps into a conversational assistant capable of helping users plan routes, suggest places to visit, and recommend restaurants based on specific preferences.
By combining Gemini’s AI models with Google’s extensive mapping database, the company says Maps can now respond to more complex, real-world questions about locations and travel.
Google says the Ask Maps feature is launching today in India and the United States.
It will be available in English on both Android and iOS versions of Google Maps, with Hindi support coming later.
The feature shows up as a dedicated “Ask Maps” button in the app, letting users type or speak their questions directly.
Ask Maps is built to handle more complex queries than traditional map searches. Rather than just showing nearby locations, it can answer multi-part questions and offer contextual suggestions tailored to the user’s needs.
For instance, users could ask whether driving or taking the metro to Connaught Place is faster, and Ask Maps will compare routes, current traffic, and estimated travel times before offering a recommendation.
It also aids local discovery—someone planning a night out could request restaurants showing a live sports match with vegetarian options, and the system would suggest suitable spots along with details like menu highlights, ambiance, and parking availability.
