Google Maps has finally rolled out its speedometer and speed limit features on iOS and CarPlay, more than five years after their debut on Android. This update aims to assist iPhone users in avoiding speeding tickets while driving.
Google is currently deploying the speedometer and speed limits globally for iPhone users. Upon starting navigation in Google Maps, users will now see their vehicle’s speed displayed in miles or kilometers per hour, depending on their region.
The new features were initially spotted by TechCrunch in India early last week. Google confirmed on Tuesday that the rollout is expanding worldwide.
To activate the speedometer and speed limits on your iPhone, users can navigate to their profile picture within the Google Maps app, then go to Settings > Navigation > Driving options. Once enabled, the speed limits feature will display the speed limit for the current road, and the speed indicator will change colors to encourage users to stay within the legal speed limit.
Google emphasizes on a support page that the speedometer feature is for informational purposes only. Users should rely on their vehicle’s built-in speedometer for accurate driving speed readings.
The speedometer and speed limits were first introduced on Android in 2019 and subsequently expanded to over 40 countries in May of the same year, following an initial limited release.
