Google expands AI integration in search amid industry shift

Google settles $100m lawsuit over ad pricing disputes

Google is accelerating its integration of artificial intelligence into its Search engine, marking a significant transformation in how billions of users access information online.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai outlined these developments during the company’s earnings call on Tuesday, describing the evolution as a “journey” toward AI-powered search experiences.

The first major step in this shift was the introduction of AI overviews, a feature that fundamentally changed Google’s traditional list-based search results. Despite a rocky rollout, which saw AI-generated responses producing inaccuracies and unusual recommendations, Google remains committed to enhancing its search capabilities through AI-driven solutions.

“As AI continues to expand the universe of queries that people can ask, 2025 is going to be one of the biggest years for search innovation yet,” Pichai stated in his opening remarks.

Pichai detailed Google’s strategy to integrate AI technology from its research division, DeepMind, further into Search. The goal is to evolve the platform into a more sophisticated AI assistant that actively browses the internet, processes web pages, and delivers comprehensive responses, reducing users’ need to sift through multiple search results.

One of the most anticipated innovations is Project Astra, DeepMind’s multimodal AI system, which can analyze live video feeds and answer queries about its observations in real time. Pichai suggested that this technology could eventually be incorporated into augmented reality smart glasses, potentially revolutionizing how users interact with digital information.

Another major development is Gemini Deep Research, an AI agent designed to generate detailed reports over several minutes, effectively automating research tasks traditionally performed by users. Pichai emphasized that this feature could significantly reshape how people utilize Google Search, allowing for more in-depth and contextualized answers rather than instantaneous responses.

Google’s aggressive push into AI-powered search is largely seen as a response to the rapid rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has grown into one of the internet’s most widely used products. The chatbot’s ability to generate conversational, AI-driven answers poses a direct challenge to Google’s search dominance.

To stay competitive, Google is not only developing its own AI chatbot, Gemini, but is also embedding AI features directly into Search. This approach is expected to have wide-reaching implications for advertisers and publishers that depend on Google’s search traffic for visibility and revenue.

Despite these advancements, Google has faced criticism over its AI implementation. The launch of AI overviews was marred by several instances of erroneous and bizarre AI-generated responses. Acknowledging these issues, Google has committed to refining its AI-driven search functionalities before expanding them further.

Looking ahead, Google is exploring ways to make Search more interactive, allowing users to ask follow-up questions and refine queries dynamically. The company is also testing Project Mariner, an AI system capable of navigating websites and extracting relevant information on behalf of users, potentially reducing direct website visits.
