Google, Epic Games near settlement over Play Store payment dispute

Google and Epic Games appear close to resolving their long-standing legal battle over the Play Store.

The two companies have jointly submitted a proposed settlement to the court, which could significantly reshape the way Android and Google Play function.

Announcing the move in a post on X, Google’s President of Android Ecosystem, Sameer Samat, said the company “filed a proposed set of changes to Android and Google Play that focus on expanding developer choice and flexibility, lowering fees, and encouraging more competition — all while keeping users safe.”

He added that, if approved, the agreement would settle all ongoing litigation between the companies.

A court hearing on the proposal is set for Thursday.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney also commented on the proposal in a post on X, describing Google’s plan as an “awesome” and “comprehensive solution” that reinforces Android’s “original vision as an open platform.”

He said the agreement would simplify the installation of competing app stores worldwide, lower Play Store service fees, and permit third-party in-app and web payments, key reforms Epic has long advocated for.

Sweeney also took a swipe at Apple, noting that Google’s proposed reforms contrast sharply with Apple’s tightly controlled ecosystem, which he said “blocks all competing stores.”

If the court approves the settlement, it would bring an end to one of the tech industry’s most high-profile antitrust battles.

Epic originally sued Google in 2020 after Fortnite was removed from the Play Store for introducing its own payment system to avoid Google’s platform fees.
