Prices for staple foods like tomatoes, beans, and garri increased dramatically in June 2024 when comparedl to the same period in 2023.
This was disclosed in the National Bureau of Statistics report, showing these increases in its Selected Food Price Watch released on Wednesday.
According to the NBS, the price of tomatoes (1kg) surged by 320.67% from N547.28 in June 2023 to N2,302.26 in June 2024. The report noted:
“Tomatoes (1kg) experienced significant price increases year on year by 320.67 percent from N547.28 in June of last year (2023) to N2,302.26 in June 2024.”
The price of beans brown (1kg), sold loose, rose by 252.13% from N651.12 in June 2023 to N2,292.76 in June 2024. The NBS added:
“Selected Food Price Watch for June 2024 shows that the average price of 1kg beans brown (sold loose) stood at N2,292.76. This indicates a rise of 252.13 percent in price on a year-on-year basis from N651.12 recorded in June 2023.”
The price of Irish potatoes increased dramatically as well, rising from N623.75 in June 2023 to N2,423.27 in June 2024, showing a 288.5% rise.
“There was also a notable price increase of Irish potato by 288.5 percent on a year-on-year basis from N623.75 in June 2023 to N2,423.27 in June 2024,” the NBS report stated.
Garri white (1kg), sold loose, increased by 181.66% from N403.15 in June 2023 to N1,135.51 in June 2024. The report mentioned:
“Furthermore, the average price of 1kg Garri white sold loose went up by 181.66 percent on a year-on-year basis from N403.15 in June 2023 to N1,135.51 in June 2024.”
The price of yam tuber also increased significantly by 295.79% from N510.77 in June 2023 to N2,021.55 in June 2024.
“Also, the average price of 1kg of Yam tuber increased by 295.79 percent on a year-on-year basis from N510.77 in June 2023 to N2,021.55 in June 2024,” the NBS added.
The NBS report also highlighted regional differences in prices. The highest average price for 1kg of brown beans was in Kogi State at N3,006.43, while Adamawa had the lowest at N1,336.11. For tomatoes, Abuja recorded the highest price at N3,992.61, and Kebbi State had the lowest at N1,200.00.
“Regarding the average price of 1kg of yam tuber, Lagos State recorded the highest price at N3,376.54, while Adamawa recorded the lowest price at N1,100.00,” the report said.
The report concludes by noting the highest average price of 1kg of garri white sold loose was in Gombe at N1,619.27, while Taraba recorded the lowest at N900.
The report’s conclusion states that Taraba had the lowest average price of N900 for 1 kg of loose garri white, while Gombe had the highest average price of N1,619.27.
